Chiliadou Beach on Evia in Greece was recently awarded as the Best European Filming Location of the Year by the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN).

The beach of the Aegean Sea was featured in Triangle of Sadness and is the winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes 2022. It is the castaway island where the protagonists find themselves after the explosion of their yacht. The island becomes the set for a fight for survival.

Originally, Ruben Östlund’s black comedy film was intended to shoot in Thailand on a location that would combine a virgin beach with a jungle-like flora embracing the sea.

Greece was chosen for many reasons, as highlighted by Erik Hemmendorff, one of the main producers of the film: The Greek cash rebate had just been announced, Greece is part of Europe, and is much closer to Sweden than Thailand.

Chiliadou Beach in Greece was the ideal filming location

EUFCN says that it has chosen this location mainly for the quality of the place itself: “We found Evia and Chiliadou Beach a bit different than the ‘usual’ and more touristic Greece.

“The vegetation, the high mountains, the sea, and the stony beaches, give the island a feel of an ‘unknown and secret place’, which fits perfectly to the story of the film. The support and hospitality from the local community was also a very big factor,” said EUFCN.

Chiliadou is located on the eastern Aegean end of the island of Evia. The beach is separated into two parts by a large rock. The northern end of the beach is a designated popular nudist beach that has been the center of nudism in mainland Greece for the last forty years.

At the north end of the nudist beach just before the cave, there is a steep footpath, which takes you above and around the mountain to another beautiful virgin beach with two sea caves, one on each side.

Its name comes from the small church near the beach. It is a sandy pebble beach with crystal-clear blue waters. The water is shallow as soon as one enters but then suddenly deepens, so one should be cautious, especially when there are young kids.

The nature around the beach is amazing. Forest comes down to the shore, and huge rocks make for quite a scene. It is a northerly oriented beach and is often exposed to strong winds. It’s best to be avoided when north winds blow in the area.

Although free camping is prohibited, the beach is an attraction for many campers. Part of the beach is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds.
