The dramatic moment a surfer was rescued from a huge wave off the coast of Portugal was captured on a video.

The incident earlier in February involved veteran surfer Salvador Villas-Boas who was riding one of the biggest waves of the day off Nazare.

A bump knocked him off into the water near some rocks. As the second wave closes in on the stranded surfer professional jetski rescuer Ramon Laureano saves Villas-Boas by dragging him out of harm’s way.

Pedro Miranda, who captured this dramatic footage said: “This rescue in particular was truly one of the most heroic moments I witnessed out there.

“With more than 20 years of big wave experience, Ramon performed one of the most difficult rescues one can attempt in Nazare. To pick up someone directly on the first peak’s impact zone between waves is something you don’t see every day here. Ramon was a real hero, no doubt!”

Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazare, has become famous worldwide for its huge waves. The beach is an exposed reef break that has very consistent surf and works all around the year.

Offshore winds are from the east. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the ideal swell angle is from the west.
