Richard Branson recently revealed some rather startling—and, to some, quite amusing— news concerning his fellow billionaire, Elon Musk. Evidently, the owner of Tesla and former CEO of Twitter surprised the British mogul with a late-night visit at his home in New Mexico hours before his 2021 Virgin Galactic spaceflight.

The entertaining event evidently happened on July 11, 2021 in the early morning when Branson awoke to find Musk standing barefoot in his kitchen holding his baby son, X Æ A-12, in his arms.

The business magnate spoke of the incident in an exclusive interview with The Sunday Times, sharing the story of their brief, pre-dawn encounter.

During the course of an in-depth interview with The Times, the knighted entrepreneur described what he called an unexpected visit at 2:30 in the morning by a barefoot Musk bearing his young baby boy in arms in the kitchen of Branson’s home in New Mexico.

“I woke up two hours earlier than I was meant to and jumped out of bed, and then actually realized I’d got the wrong time, but by then I was wide awake,” he told the UK newspaper.

Branson then found Musk waiting for him “to wish him good luck ahead of the voyage.”

Richard Branson and Elon Musk are well-acquainted, having already met during a wedding at Branson’s Caribbean home. So, though surprised, the founder of Virgin Group greeted the unanticipated visitor warmly.

“Basically, he’s a night animal,” he explained. “He doesn’t really sleep at night and gets his sleep in the day. We made a pot of tea and sat outside under the stars and caught up.”

They then captured the moment for both of their followers on Twitter by sharing a photo of the two of them at Branson’s home.

Branson and Musk’s vision for future space travel

Virgin Galactic is what many might call Richard Branson’s most daring, entrepreneurial brainchild. “Welcome to Virgin Galactica, one of the world’s first commercial spacelines,” announces the official website.

The temptation of “weightlessness, breathtaking views of Earth, and a life-changing transformation through our unique and innovative spaceflight system, all in unparalleled comfort” is what the pioneering company promises.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is set to offer its own version of Branson’s visionary hopes for the future of travel. Musk hopes this will help make life ‘interplanetary.’

“You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great—and that’s what being a spacefaring civilization is all about,” he said. “It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.”
