Two Greek-American House Representatives have been re-elected in the 2022 U.S. midterms.

The first, New York Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, won against former Democratic Rep. Max Rose in a rematch between the two.

The second, Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes, was reelected to the state’s 3rd Congressional District after defeating Republican Yuripzy Morgan.

Redrawing the battle lines

Since 2020, Malliotakis took over the seat and was able to keep it after winning against Rose, a military officer, after only serving just one term. Democrats in Albany had tried to throw Malliotakis off the seat by redrawing congressional lines that would affect her conservative, majority Staten Island 11th district by adding liberal parts of Brooklyn, including Park Slope, to the picture.

Malliotakis however was saved by a judge who struck down redistricting Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul had sought to push forward, and had a special master redraw the lines.

Earlier in the summer, Rose tried to engage with voters by arguing that the state’s controversial bail laws need to be changed, however his attempts failed to gain him voters.

He said, “This is very simple: Gov. Hochul and the legislature need to have a special session to change the bail law. … Judges need the discretion to detain recidivists. Get it fixed,” according to a report by The New York Post.
