Nia Vardalos took to Instagram on Tuesday to announce the filming of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, which is being shot in Greece.

“I have an announcement, we are in Greece filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” she said in a candid video where she also confirmed she will be directing the film.

A visibly excited Vardalos recorded the video from a Greek hotel room saying that the Hollywood blockbuster’s third chapter is being filmed in Plaka, Athens as well as Corfu.

“We are in Greece filming ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ and thank you for all the lovely messages of just waiting,” Vardalos said and even gave fans a quick snippet of the set.

The 59-year-old Greek-Canadian actress is ready to delve into the life of Toula Portokalos alongside her on-screen husband, John Corbett.

Sadly, Michael Constantine, who played Nia’s father, passed away last year.

“Much love and gratitude to you all for your support as we waited to film. Greece baby. Greece!,” she wrote in the caption.

The sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, came out in 2016 and featured the original cast plus then-newcomer Elena Kampouris playing Nia’s daughter.

Vardalos’ My Big Fat Greek Wedding was released in 2002

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, released in 2002, became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time and grossed $241.4 million in North America despite never reaching number one at the box office during its release.

It was the highest-grossing film with that distinction for fourteen years until the animated film Sing grossed $268 million in 2016.

Despite being based on life in the Greek community of Winnipeg, the film was set in Chicago and shot in both Toronto and Chicago. Toronto’s Ryerson University and Greektown neighborhood feature prominently in the film.

The home used to depict Gus and Maria Portokalos’s residence (as well as the home bought next door at the end of the film for Toula and Ian) is located on Glenwood Crescent just off O’Connor Drive in the Toronto suburb of East York.

The real home representing the Portokalos’ residence actually has most of the external ornamentation that was shown in the film.
