Greece was hit with strong thunderstorms on Monday bringing rain, lightning, and stormy weather across the country, which had previously been experiencing summertime heat.

Strong winds, warm temperatures, heavy rain, lightening, and even hail have all been reported across the country, and the stormy weather could continue into Friday, according to the Greek National Meteorological Service.

On Monday evening, much of mainland Greece from Macedonia to Attica was hit with thunderstorms.

Meteorologists predict that the strong rains and storms will continue into Tuesday in Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and central Greece, and will only begin to die down on Thursday.

Meanwhile the Cycladic, Sporades, and Aegean islands, which are not believed to experience much rain early in the week, will likely be hit with storms on Friday.

Experts believe the stormy weather will die down by the weekend.

Severe weather phenomena across Greece

The Greek Ministry for Civil Protection issued a warning about the severe weather phenomena in the country on Monday.

The Ministry advised people to remain cautious and careful during the storms, secure any outdoor furniture, avoid working outside and engaging in water sports, and stay away from large trees during rainstorms.

The rainstorms come just a few days after a fire started at the foothills of Mount Hymettus in the the southern Athens suburb of Ano Glyfada on Saturday.

On late Saturday afternoon, officials began evacuating residents of several areas in the neighboring Ano Voula and Vari. People continued being evacuated as the blaze spread towards them.

About ninety percent of Voula had been evacuated by 8:45 pm, according to the Mayor of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, Grigoris Konstantellos. The blaze had passed through the city and caused material damage, he told Greek network Ant1 TV.
