Santorini on the cheap? Although the Greek island is notorious for having very expensive accommodations, that doesn’t mean there aren’t still some cheap hotels and places to stay available for Summer 2022. Whether you want to stay in Fira, Oia, or a bit outside the main towns, there are indeed some affordable options on Santorini.

Cheap Hotels on Santorini

A classic family-friendly option for travel lodging are hotels. Of course, the majority of hotels on Santorini are not particularly affordable and are more geared towards travelers seeking a luxurious stay. However, there are many exceptions to this rule!

Something to look for when searching for cheap hotels on Santorini are hotels with a 3-star rating. Usually, hotels of that class are clean and pleasant, but just a bit more basic than their competitors. Although these hotels may have fewer amenities, they can still provide a good place to sleep while you explore beautiful Santorini!

Even in the peak summer season, hotels of this class remain relatively cheap, with prices per night at under €100 ($120). Many of them have pools and are in fairly central locations, meaning you don’t have to sacrifice too much to spare your wallet!

Rules of thumb for finding affordable lodging on Santorini

One of the most important factors that influence Santorini hotel pricing is the season. Peak season is summer and more specifically early July to late August – which is why prices during this period are a lot higher.

People looking for a cheaper stay in Santorini should avoid the summer months altogether. Greece is still very warm in May or September, making those months perfect for visiting Santorini.

Another important consideration is location. Caldera views are highly valued on the island, and hotels which offer them are generally a lot more pricey. As a rule, hotels near Oia are also a bit more expensive, due to the area’s reputation for being more upscale.

This means that for travelers who prioritize being near a town on their trip to Santorini, it may be a better idea to stay near the capital, Fira. Another option is to keep away from both towns altogether! There are many cheap hotels available outside of the main towns.

A tourist attraction that boasts some nearby inexpensive accommodation is Kamari beach. Famed for its black sands, it has excellent hotels for much more affordable prices nearby. This rule can be applied to the whole beach (or East) side of the island, where travelers sacrifice caldera views for cheaper lodging.

Alternatives to hotels

There are also many alternatives to hotels on Santorini for those who prioritize budget and don’t mind no-frills travel!

One of the options available is youth hostels. Hostels on Santorini offer both dormitory-style accommodation, where people stay in shared rooms of four to twelve people, and private rooms. Private rooms are a bit more expensive than shared rooms, but both options are generally priced at under €50 ($60).

Hostels on Santorini will generally have shared bathroom facilities, as well as no turndown service. For those that don’t mind sacrificing luxury, hostels can be a great option! Many hostels on Santorini do have a reputation for being clean, which is a big positive. Hostels can also offer a much more unique experience than hotels due to their social nature.

Another option when planning a cheap visit to Santorini is to go camping! There are multiple organized campsites available, which will allow you to pitch a tent or stay in a caravan for as little as €30 ($36). Campsites conventionally offer bathrooms for guests to use as well as often having a bar/restaurant for those who stay.

Santorini is made up of two main towns, Oia and Fira. Oia is the more luxurious town, where travelers go for fine dining and upscale shopping, whereas Fira is Santorini’s capital, offering more nightlife and other shopping opportunities. Cheap hotels can be found anywhere on Santorini!

Santorini is famed for its volcano, Thera. The caldera of the volcano is a hotspot for travelers who visit the stunningly-beautiful island, which has villages perched atop its craggy peaks.

The island is known for its colorful volcanic stone backdrop with white houses and winding streets while climbing the cliffs leads you to villages with their own breathtaking views.

When traveling to Santorini, slightly higher prices are to be expected. Regardless, there are still many options for those who are a bit more budget-conscious.
