Covid Deaths Remain High in Greece

Greece confirmed 12,108 new Covid-19 infections and 84 deaths in the last 24 hours, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on Sunday.

Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed 1,793,311 Covid-19 infections. In the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 418 infections are related to travel from abroad and 2,550 to other confirmed cases.

There are also 84 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of pandemic victims to 22,635. Of these, 95 percent had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.

The death rate per million in Greece, which is higher than most European countries and even the US, has caused major concern in the country.

A total of 679 patients are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 66 years and 81.3 percent have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over. Of the total, 537 are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated and 128 are fully vaccinated.

Another 3,977 have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.

In addition, 423 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours. The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 491.

The median age of new infections is 36 years, while the median age of the deceased is 78.
