A new Covid-19 record was set in Greece on Friday – New Year’s Eve — with the country’s health authorities announcing 40,560 new cases across the country.

Although the number of cases of the Omicron variant are approximately the same, the new record number is 4,980 cases over yesterday’s total.

On Thursday, Greece had recorded another staggering total of 35,580 cases of Covid-19, an increase of 6,752 over the 28,828 that has been recorded on Wednesday.

This is the highest number of cases ever recorded in the country in a 24-hour period since the start of the pandemic.

The previous record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day in Greece had been broken yesterday.

Just 32 of Friday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 627 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, nine fewer than the 636 who were undergoing the invasive treatment on Thursday.

A total of 76 people across Greece died with Covid-19 on Friday, four more than the 72 people who succumbed with the virus on Thursday. This brings the total number of deaths associated with the virus to 20,790 as of Friday.

A total of 87 cases of the Omicron mutation of the virus were diagnosed on Thursday.

95.2% of the people who succumbed with the virus had underlying disease and/or were age 70 years and older.

Friday marks the fifth consecutive day that Greece has broken a record for the most cases in 24 hours since the beginning of the pandemic.

The total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic amounts to 1,170,293 (showing a daily increase of 3.1%), of which 50.4% are men.

Based on the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 217 are considered to be related to travel from abroad and 1,410 are related to an already known case.

Among intubated patients, 541 (86.28%) are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 86 (13.72%) are fully vaccinated. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,759 patients have been discharged from the ICU across the country.

The number of admissions of new Covid-19 patients to Greek hospitals was 439, showing an increase of 18 over Thursday.

The average number of admissions for Covid-19 in Greece is 359 per week, up from 346 the day prior.

The total number of cases is 1,210,853, showing a daily increase of 3.5%, of which 50.3% are men.

The median age of all this suffering with the virus is 36 years, while the median age of death is 78 years.

Greece leads EU in Covid-19 testing

Greece is among the top five countries in Europe in terms of coronavirus testing rates, Greek government spokesperson Giannis Oikonomou noted on Friday.

“Greece is among the top in Europe in terms of tests. The numbers tell the truth,” Oikonomou stated.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Greece ranks in the fourth spot in terms of rapid and PCR testing in all of Europe.

The ECDC releases a series of maps each week that indicate the epidemiological circumstances across Europe, based on data for the 14 days up to midnight on Tuesday of each week.

The most recent map shows that all of Greece is labeled as “dark green,” indicating an extremely high testing rate of over 5,000 tests per 100,000 people.

From May 2020 until late December 2021, nearly 9 million tests have been administered for free by the Greek National Public Health Organization. The total, coming to 8,759,556, does not include tests taken at private clinics or those offered for free by the Greek National Health System.

Over 86 million free self-tests have been distributed to millions of Greeks since April 2021, and one out of five confirmed cases of the virus in Greece was identified through the use of self-tests.

The total number of coronavirus cases that were discovered through self-testing in Greece amounts to 1,170,293.

Greece is committed to offering free testing, whether it be rapid, self, or PCR tests, to its citizens, and has spent around 300 million Euros to offer coronavirus tests free of charge.
