Coronavirus Cases on the Rise in Greece on Christmas Eve

Greece recorded a total of 7,665 cases of the coronavirus on Friday, Christmas Eve, 998 more than the 6,667 recorded on Thursday.

The record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day in Greece was broken more than a month ago, on November 9, when 8,623 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed.

Just 10 of Friday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 624 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, 31 fewer than the 655 in the country on Thursday.

A total of 94 people with Covid-19 passed away in Greece on Friday alone, compared to the 71 people who died with the virus in the country on Thursday.

This brings the total number of coronavirus-related fatalities in the country to 20,292 since the beginning of the pandemic.

3,433 Coronavirus cases in Attica, 985 in Thessaloniki

Of the 7,665 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 3,433 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

A total of 1,173 cases of Covid-19 were identified in central Athens on Friday.

In Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece, 985 cases of the virus were identified today.

Over one million Covid-19 cases recorded in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 1,064,243 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the 624 patients intubated currently, 79% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 63.

The majority of those who are on ventilators in Greece, or 83.97%, are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Additionally, a total of 3,708 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Tests Positive for Coronavirus

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has tested positive for Covid-19, the Patriarchate at Constantinople announced on Friday.

“His Holiness, who is fully vaccinated, is currently showing mild symptoms, but his general condition is good,” an announcement said.

It added that “immediately after the diagnosis, he visited the Central Hospital of Constantinople for further preventive examinations.

“The Ecumenical Patriarch thanks all those who express their interest in his state of health and urges, once again, all to follow the recommendations of doctors and specialists, as well as those who have not yet been vaccinated, to do it for the good of themselves and of society as a whole.

On this occasion, he wishes everyone a Merry and Blessed Christmas,” the announcement reads.
