A total of 77 people with Covid-19 passed away in Greece on Tuesday alone, compared to the 85 people who died with the virus in the country on Monday.

This brings the total number of coronavirus-related fatalities in the country to 20,055 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Greece recorded a total of 6,424 cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, 2,735 more than the 3,689 recorded on Monday.

The record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day in Greece was broken more than a month ago, on November 9, when 8,623 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed.

In the past day, a total of 555,381 coronavirus tests have been administered, including both PCR and rapid tests, bringing the positivity rate in Greece to 1.15%.

Just four of Tuesday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 661 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, nine fewer than the 670 in the country on Monday.

Greece offers two free self-tests for holidays

Greece will offer two free Covid-19 self tests to all Greeks over the holidays to help curb the spread of the virus, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Tuesday.

Mitsotakis decided on the measure after health officials recommended that he make a negative rapid test mandatory for entrance to enclosed spaces such as non-essential stores, restaurants, and cafes, which are currently accessible only by those who have been vaccinated.

The PM stated that he “rejected” the proposal, as he believes “that such a measure would be unfair for the vaccinated and, in the end, very difficult to implement.

“So instead of imposing something on everyone, I chose to trust everyone. And for this very purpose, the state will provide two more free self tests for the entire population,” he added.

It is recommended that all Greeks take one free self test before Christmas and the other just after New Year’s day, but there is no requirement to use the self test.

Of the 6,424 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 2,264 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

A total of 689 cases of Covid-19 were identified in central Athens on Tuesday.

In Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece, 1,000 cases of the virus were identified today.

Over one million Covid-19 cases recorded in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 1,044,301 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the 661 patients intubated currently, 79.7% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 63.

The majority of those who are on ventilators in Greece, or 82.45%, are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Additionally, a total of 3,679 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
