What Americans and Greeks Searched on Google in 2021

Google released its annual “Year in Search” list on Wednesday, offering a glimpse into the top trending search terms both globally and broken down by country and categories.

Last year, “coronavirus” predictably topped the Google search list globally. In 2021, the focus shifted as politics, sports, personalities, and movies made a comeback.

In the U.S., news and politics caught more attention: “NBA,” “DMX,” “Gabby Petito,” “Kyle Rittenhouse” and “Brian Laundrie” were the top five searched terms domestically.

Americans’ minds were also on the money: Mega Millions, AMC stock, and stimulus checks ranked sixth, seventh and eighth respectively in overall searches. Googlers wanted to know “how to be eligible for a stimulus check,” and searches spiked for “dogecoin” when amateur investors worked to send the cryptocurrency “to the moon.”

Top of the Google search items in Greece were deceased celebrities as rapper Mad Clip, followed by politician Fofi Gennimata and Mikis Theodorakis, while Stefanos Tsitsipas ranked third amongst the living ones. Prince Philip was also among the most searched people.
