Greece recorded a total of 7,108 cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, while 8,100 were recorded in the country yesterday, Tuesday.
The record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day in Greece was broken on November 9, when 8,623 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed.
In the past day, a total of 350,180 coronavirus tests have been administered, including both PCR and rapid tests, bringing the positivity rate in Greece to 2.02%. This is up from yesterday’s rate, which was 1.25%.
The average age of those who have tested positive for the virus in Greece is still 38, and the average age of those who have died with the virus is still 78, showing no change over the past several days.
A total of 93 people with the virus passed away in the country on Wednesday alone; this is two more than the 91 people who died with Covid-19 in Greece on Tuesday.
Just 12 of Wednesday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.
Currently, there are 612 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, which is 15 more than the 597 patients undergoing the invasive treatment in the country on Tuesday.
ECDC warns Europe to implement measures before it’s too late
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has warned Europe to take strict measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus after a number of European countries have experienced a dramatic rise in transmission in recent weeks.
The ECDC recommended on Wednesday for European countries to put anti-virus measures in place and push for higher vaccination rates in order to avoid a “very high Covid-19 burden” in Europe.
The coming Winter months and holiday season, along with lower vaccination rates, may worsen the already tenuous coronavirus situation in Europe.
“Recent modeling scenarios run by ECDC indicate that the potential burden of disease in the EU/EEA from the Delta variant will be very high in December and January,” Andrea Ammon, Director of the ECDC, stated on Wednesday.
Currently, an average of 67.7% of European citizens are vaccinated against the coronavirus, but the rate varies wildly from country to country.
1,826 coronavirus cases in Attica, 1,200 in Thessaloniki
Of the 7,108 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 1,826 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.
A total of 489 cases of Covid-19 were identified in central Athens on Wednesday.
In Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece, 1,200 cases of the virus were identified today.
Over 900,000 cases of the coronavirus recorded in Greece
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 901,661 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.
Of the 612 patients intubated currently, 80.7% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 65.
The majority of those who are on ventilators in Greece, or 81.54%, are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Additionally, a total of 3,469 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
The 93 new deaths recorded on Wednesday bring the total number of coronavirus-related fatalities in the country to 17,612.
