Greece recorded 6,909 cases of the coronavirus on Friday — the highest number ever recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The previous record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day was broken just yesterday, Thursday, when 6,808 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in Greece.

In the past day, a total of 263,150 coronavirus tests have been administered, including both PCR and rapid tests, bringing the positivity rate in Greece to 2.63%. This figure is down from yesterday’s positivity rate, which was 3.35%.

Tragically, 48 people suffering from the coronavirus passed away in Greece over the past 24-hour period, which is six more than the 42 deaths recorded in the country on Thursday.

The average age of those who have tested positive for the virus in Greece is 39, and the average age of those who have died with the virus is 78.

A total of just 11 of Friday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 450 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, which is nine more than the 441 patients undergoing the invasive treatment in the country on Thursday.

Pfizer Anti-Covid pill extremely effective

Pfizer’s brand-new anti-Covid pill called “Paxlovid” reduces hospitalization and death risk by 89%, the company states as it readies to place the results of its studies before the FDA by the end of November.

Taking the pills developed by Pfizer over the course of just five days can almost eliminate the risk of being hospitalized or succumbing to the coronavirus by 89% as long as the course of treatment is embarked upon within three days of when symptoms start, the Pharma giant stated on Friday morning in its announcement.

In addition, Merck has now placed its own anti-Covid pill, Molnupiravir, on the market in the UK after it was authorized on Thursday by the drug and medication authority there.

Elderly patients at Thessaloniki clinic infected with covid-19

Multiple elderly patients at a private clinic in Thermi near the city of Thessaloniki have been infected with Covid-19. At least seven were admitted into the hospital due to their symptoms.

Although all the patients were taken to the Papanikolaou General Hospital in Thessaloniki, only five patients, all women, were admitted there, and the other two were sent to the AHEPA Hospital in the city.

Diamantis Floros, head of the pandemic response at the Papanikolaou hospital, spoke to AMNA about the condition of the patients on Friday, stating:

“”Out of the five women admitted to Papanikolaou hospital, four are in good condition (three are aged between 80 and 90 and one is a younger woman with an underlying condition) while the fifth case needs more attention,”

Over 700,000 cases of Coronavirus recorded in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 774,265 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the 450 patients intubated currently, 81.3% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 64.

The majority of those who are on ventilators in Greece, or 84%, are unvaccinated against the coronavirus.
