Greece and Saudi Arabia agreed to expand collaboration in investments, energy, tourism and defense during a meeting between Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh on Tuesday.

To that effect, the two leaders underlined the significance of the newly established Greece-Saudi Arabia Business Council, which is expected to fortify the collaboration of the two countries’ business communities, said Greek government sources. Additionally, they agreed to set up a bilateral Supreme Council of Cooperation, which will convene sometime in the first half of 2022.

The Saudi side welcomed the Greek private sector’s direct partnership with the Saudi private sector in fields of desalination plants, drinking water, water lines, sewage treatment plants, dams in ongoing and future projects, and organizing commercial activities in the field of agriculture to discuss possibilities of investment in the agricultural, food, fishing and animal husbandry industries.

In addition, Greece and Saudi Arabia highlighted the need to maximize the use of points of intersection in the renewable energy sector, military and pharmaceutical industries and logistics services.

In the field of defense and security cooperation, the Greece and Saudi Arabia agreed to work on raising the readiness status, levels and skills of their military forces through joint military exercises and maneuvers, and to coordinate and exchange military experience in order to achieve security for both countries and stability for the region.

Furthermore, the two sides agreed to work on localizing the supportive technology and military industries. The two sides commended the cooperation achieved in the areas of security and expressed their desire to promote and develop such cooperation in the interests of achieving security and stability in the two countries.

The Saudi Crown Prince also thanked Greece for delivering the Patriot missile system in September. The missiles will reportedly remain in the country for an undetermined period of time, and will be used to strengthen Saudi air defenses. It comes after the US removed most of its Patriot missile batteries from the kingdom.

Mitsotakis calls on Turkey to stop “aggressive posturing”

The two leaders also exchanged views on the latest developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and in Greek-Turkish relations, as well as in North Africa and the Middle East.

Mitsotakis called on Turkey to stop its “aggressive posturing” and engage in talks over their maritime dispute.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned that Greece had “drawn our lines very, very clearly” after signing defense deals with the United States and France earlier this month.

“We are secure. I don’t think there is a geopolitical threat,” Mitsotakis told the elite annual meeting dubbed ‘Davos in the Desert,’ with Prince Mohammed in the audience.

“And I think at the end of the day, Turkey will also realize that this aggressive posturing in the eastern Mediterranean is not going to lead anywhere.”
