Athenians Head Out of Capital Before Second Lockdown Begins

As many most likely expected, there was a bit of a coronavirus exodus out of the Greek capital on Friday, with a great deal of the public apparently desiring to head back to the family village to wait out the new lockdown.
Throngs of people were seen doing their shopping today, before the strict coronavirus measures go into effect at 6 AM on Saturday morning, although all grocery stores an butcher shops will remain open for the three-week lockdown.
Additionally, supermarkets and all other food stores will also be open from 9 AM to 5 PM this Sunday.
Others were seen forming lines at banks in order to pay their bills, according to Greek media reports. All banking during the lockdown must be limited to transactions that cannot be accomplished online.
The fashionable Athens shopping district of Ermou Street was also a popular destination for those who didn’t want to go without their upscale items — or perhaps for those who are doing some important Christmas shopping, just in case the three-week lockdown is extended further.
Toll booths in all directions out from the Greek capital recorded huge upticks in traffic on Friday, and there were especially large numbers of vehicles making their way along Kifissos, Vassilias Sofia and Vassilias Konstantinos Avenue as well as all the streets in the port of Piraeus, according to reports.
On the great Attiki Odos, motorists traveling to Elefsina experienced delays of 15-20 minutes. It was reported that more than 4,000 vehicles had passed through the tollbooths at Elefsina and Afidnes from just 6 AM to 9 AM on Friday.
Yesterday, a total of 47,731 vehicles passed through these toll checkpoints according to reports, a huge increase over the usual flow of traffic, which amounted to 30,123 for the same period last week.
