The annual Washington, D.C. based scholarship competition celebrating the Greek spirit is once again underway.

Sponsored by the Washington OXI Day Foundation, the awards will give recipients scholarships totaling up to $10,000 this year,  doubling the usual amount as a celebration of the foundation’s tenth anniversary.

Five Greek-American students ranging from sixth graders to high school seniors will win the scholarships after best describing the concept of “philotimo” according to the contest’s judges.

The first-place winner will receive a scholarship of $4,000 along with an invitation to take part in the OXI Day Foundation’s Courage and Service awards ceremony, scheduled for October 28 in Washington, D.C.

There will be two winners of the second-place scholarship, which is in the amount of $2,000. Another two students will receive the third-place scholarships, for $1,000 each.

All those interested in applying should watch the video called “The Greek Secret” on the concept of philotimo. The video is available at the following link, here.

All the scholars must then write an essay in 500 words or less, answering the following questions: What does philotimo mean to you; What are some extraordinary examples of philotimo that you have seen; What are some of the things you can do in your daily life to exhibit philotimo and How can philotimo improve your life?

All essays must be submitted to the Washington OXI Day Foundation via email to this address: by October 10, 2020.
