The beloved French star of a string of award-winning films such as “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “The Last Metro,” and “Police,” actor Gerard Depardieu converted to Orthodox Christianity in Paris on Friday.

The 71-year-old actor, who has appeared in over 200 films, has had a strong bond with Russia since 2013, when he obtained Russian citizenship to avoid the high taxes of France.

An extremely popular figure in Russia, Depardieu was presented with his Russian passport by Russian President Vladimir Putin himself. Reportedly, a friendship has formed between the unlikely pair since then.

Friday’s baptismal ceremony was held at the imposing Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Paris, where approximately thirty of the actor’s friends and family were present to witness Depardieu’s entry into the Orthodox faith.

Depardieu has long been known for his interest in religion. In the 1960s, the award-winning actor converted to Islam, and he had also reportedly converted to Buddhism and Hinduism in the past.
