Large Fire Breaks Out Near Lavrio, Southeast of Athens

Dozens of firefighters are battling a wildfire that broke out on Thursday south of the town of Lavrio, southeast of Athens.
The fire has led to the evacuation of nearby villages, consisting mainly of vacation homes, as well as a summer camp.

Strong northerly winds are pushing the fire towards Sounion.
The fire is thought to have started within a facility operated by Hellenic Defence Systems in the area, possibly due to shots fired, burning an area of low-growing vegetation and refuse.
As the plant is situated with a 350 hectare site of pine forest in the Kamariza location, the strong winds presented a real danger that it might spread.
The Fire Service says that 49 firefighters, four helicopters and two fire-fighting aircraft are battling the flames.
