As international tourism begins to flourish once again after the coronavirus lockdowns, Greece is the second most sought-after destination among the British, according to holiday price comparison site TravelSupermarket.

Among British consumers, May 16 to 30 online searches for price comparisons for holidays departing July 1 to October 31 jumped 40 percent for July, August and September holidays, compared to the previous two-week period.

That increase includes a 51 percent increase in interest in Greek holidays among the British, compared to past weeks.

Greece was one of the very first countries in Europe to reopen its borders to international tourism, with plans to allow unlimited travel from 29 countries beginning on June 15.

Officials also announced that beginning July 1 all Greek airports will be allowed to receive international flights. However, new regulations will call for random coronavirus testing at the airport on any international visitor.

According to the Greek Tourism Ministry, tourism accounts for 20 percent of the Greek economy, directly employing 350,000 citizens in tourism-related jobs.
