Some Areas in Greece Still Untouched by Coronavirus

While Covid-19 continues to spread across Greece, there are 11 prefectures that have not reported any cases as of yet, according to a comprehensive report released by the National Public Health Organization (EODY) on Sunday.
There are no confirmed cases of people infected by Covid-19 in the following prefectures: Drama, Halkidiki, Grevena, Thesprotia, Corfu, Karditsa, Evritania, Etoloakarnania, Fokis, Corinth and Chios.
According to the report, there had been a total of 1,156 cases of people infected and 39 deaths from the coronavirus by 3 PM local time on Sunday, March 29.
Naturally, the highest number of cases have been reported in Athens and the Attica region in general, counting for almost 70 percent of people infected (22.8 cases per 100,000). Additionally, the Kastoria prefecture in northwestern Greece has the most cases per 100,000 (54).
The region of Ilia on the Peloponnesian Peninsula has 25.1 cases per 100,000 residents.

Even though the number of people in ICU units across the country has steadily risen since the beginning of the coronavirus spread, it has remained stable for the last three days, as the graph below shows.
This particular data point has given a sliver of optimism to epidemiologists.

Nevertheless, the EODY warns that even though there are areas where there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus and the spread of the virus appears slow, citizens must nevertheless stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel — especially with Easter approaching.
On Sunday, the Greek government announced that the traditional Easter exodus of people to the provinces and countryside has been completely banned.
Authorities fear that since most of the Covid-19 cases are in the two big urban centers of Athens and Thessaloniki, urbanites may want to go to the provinces for safety, and, consequently, spread the virus in areas that have experienced no infections yet.
The EODY report also busts the myth that Covid-19 only affects the elderly. Even though most of the cases are people between 40 and 65, the virus has infected many young people as well, and even children and infants, with about 33 percent of cases being people under 40 years of age, as the graph below shows:

According to an Athens – Macedonian News Agency report based on international figures of March 28, Greece is ranked 40th on the list of the countries with confirmed Covid-19 cases,  compared to the 32nd position it was ranked in one week ago.
Greece has approximately 102 cases per one million population, a rate that places Greece very low, in 66th place. Greece is also 28th in the number of fatalities, down from the 24th place where it landed one week before.
Nevertheless, Health Ministry spokesman Sotiris Tsiodras warns that statistics should not make Greeks feel like they can put their guard down just because the virus is spreading slower in Greece than in other countries.
He said that, as a new virus, the behavior of Covid-19 can not be predicted, so precautionary measures should remain strict and Greeks must still remain at home.
