PM Mitsotakis Tells President Trump Greece Will Defend its Sovereign Rights


Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed satisfaction following his meeting with President Trump at the White House on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters, the Greek premier said that the two sides reaffirmed the excellent state of relations between the two countries.
“We had a confirmation of the already excellent Greek-American relations, clear public statements on the course of the Greek economy and a much better understanding of President Trump himself on the geopolitical challenges of the region and how we can be part of the solution and not the problem,” Mitsotakis said.
During the private meeting with the US President, the Greek PM analyzed the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and outlined Turkey’s recent illegal and provocative actions, including the agreement signed between Ankara and Tripoli on maritime borders, which he said “destabilizes the region.”

As the prime minister underscored, “all issues concerning Greek sovereign rights were raised emphatically. It has become clear on the American side that we will not tolerate any violation of our sovereign rights.”
They also discussed, as the Prime Minister told reporters, the ongoing process of resolving the Cyprus problem.
The Prime Minister reiterated his position that Greece’s cooperation with Israel and Cyprus and the implementation of the East Med natural gas pipeline are not aimed against Turkey.
Mitsotakis analyzed his government’s actions to improve the economic climate in Greece by simplifying investment procedures, focusing on both the investment in Greece and the implementation of the national privatization program, stressing that the area of ​​defense cooperation is equally important for the US and Greece.
The Prime Minister also noted that negotiations are under way concerning Greece’s participation in the F-35 program, which is aimed at acquiring a squadron of new state-of-the-art aircraft.
The two leaders also agreed that cooperation in the field of education should also be strengthened. With this aim, the Department of Education has launched the promotion of bilateral programs for all levels of education in cooperation with the US Embassy in Greece.
Among these is a program aimed at facilitating the approach of American and Greek universities to launch long-term synergies, such as the development of joint curricula, the participation of students in language and summer programs in Greece, and the exchange of students and academic staff.
