Greek Teacher Receives International Teacher of the Year Award

Vicky Xanthopoulou, a teacher at a kindergarten in the village of Potamia, on the Greek island of Thassos, has won the prestigious “AKS International Teacher of the Year” award.
The award is given by the organization Alert Knowledge Services (AKS), based in India, to recognize exceptional educators throughput the globe who have made an outstanding contribution to their profession.
“So honored to be globally given tribute and reward for my reading animation project ‘Let’s Play Book’ by AKS Education Awards,” Xanthopoulou posted on Facebook shortly before she departed for Dubai to receive her award at a special ceremony to be held on December 14.

The “Let’s Play Book,” created by the teacher a few years ago, is an online reading animation journal which combines fun play activities with the students’ reading of actual books.
According to Xanthopoulou, the project also develops the common value of multiculturalism and harmonious coexistence among her students. She adds that she deeply believes that the process of learning at school is accomplished through play.
The teacher’s innovative journal activity has already been awarded with “The Freedon Literacy Award” by the Freedom Award organization, which is based in Pennsylvania, USA.
