Greek Olympic champion Eleftherios Petrounias won the silver medal on Saturday during the World Cup finals in the German city of Cottbus.
This left the Greek athlete with a bittersweet aftertaste since his road to qualify for the Olympic Games of Tokyo in 2020 is toughening up.
The Greek artistic gymnast of rings scored 14.866 points and thus came in second, behind Chinese Yang Liu, who took 15.133.
After receiving his silver medal, the organizers of the tournament offered Petrounias a small baby T-shirt with a stamp saying ”WELCOME ANYTIME TO COTTBUS, ΣΟΦΙΑ.”
Sophia is the new-born baby girl of Petrounias, for whom this little surprise was organized.
Now in order for Petrounias to get the ”ticket” to Japan’s Olympic, he needs to come first in all the three remaining tournaments that will take place in February and March 2020.
This is not impossible, but his task to get an Olympic presence in Japan is getting much more difficult.
Petrounias is the 2016 Olympic champion, 2018, 2017 and 2015 World champion, as well as a five-time European medalist on the still rings.
