The popular Greek island of Cephalonia (Kefalonia) in the Ionian Sea celebrated on Sunday, October 20 the memory of its Patron Saint, Agios Gerasimos.
Gerasimus of Cephalonia, as he is also known, is celebrated across the island, and many Cephalonites bear his name as a gesture of honor for his tradition.
The faithful of the Greek Orthodox Church believe that Saint Gerasimos protects all Cephalonites around the world.
On October 20, the Church commemorates the removal of his bones from the tumb.
The restitution of the relics of the island’s patron Saint is celebrated proudly in many parts of the island as well as wherever Cephalonites might live.
The inhabitants of the island celebrate their Saint twice a year, on August 16 and October 20.
During the celebrations, the tradition of his relics being passed over ill and sick people for the purpose of healing is widely practiced, as the island’s Christian flock believes their Saint does miracles.
