Greek Leper Colony Turned into Airbnb Accommodations for Adventurous Travelers

A series of caves on Crete used from the 18th century to the mid-20th century to quarantine people with leprosy (Hansen’s Disease) are now being refurbished to be offered as short-term Airbnb rentals for tourists.
Manolis Giannadakis bought five of these disused, and until now derelict, caves located in the village of Chrysopigi, a prefecture of Lasithi in eastern Crete, more than a decade ago.
Lured by the frenzy created by Airbnb-type accommodations in recent years, he decided to  renovate and decorate the caves, installing a range of modern amenities in them in order to attract tourists — albeit of the more adventuresome type.

Speaking to the local news website Nea Kriti, Giannadakis said he also plans to create an outdoor cafe and a jacuzzi just outside the caves.

He says that his ambitious project, which he hopes to complete before the next tourist season, will provide visitors with an altogether different experience as well as an opportunity to learn about the history of the village and the region.
