Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis gave an emotionally powerful speech to hundreds of Greeks and Americans of Greek descent in Astoria, New York on Wednesday evening.

“I feel like I’m one of you, and I want you to feel that I’m your man,” the Greek Premier said at the beginning of his speech at the Petros Patridis Cultural Center in the Greek enclave of Queens.

”2023 will be the year when — at last — you will vote (in Greece’s national elections) from your place of residence. Your vote will count normally; we will introduce the postal vote,” Mitsotakis promised the more than 700 people who had gathered to listen to the Greek Premier.

The cultural center in Astoria was packed for Mitsotakis’ Wednesday address.

The Cyprus Issue

A large part of Mitsotakis’ Astoria speech was dedicated to issues involving Cyprus.

”We’ll be on our Cypriot brothers’ side to defend their rights,” the Greek PM assured listeners emphatically, adding that during his meeting with Turkish President Erdogan, he had spoken about his country’s repeated violations of Cyprus‘ Exclusive Economic Zone.

Economics and Politics

The Prime Minister also discussed his party’s election in July of this year, and the current economic situation of the motherland.

”Our goal is one and only: To restore our country, to restore the dignity of Greece, a country that left the crisis behind,” Mitsotakis declared.

”An optimistic Greece is now opening its wings again to the world, the Premier added with a flourish.

Mitsotakis’ speech was from his heart, and concluded with some unabashedly emotional words for those who had made the US their new home:

“I know you made America your new home, but much of your heart is still back home,” the Premier said, who concluded by saying: ”I know that every time you look at our flag when you are away from home, its blue color becomes even brighter…”

Many prominent members of the Greek-American community attended the event, including  Elpidophoros, the newly-elected Archbishop of America.
