Europol to Install Unit in Greece's Evros to Tackle Migrant Smuggling

It was announced on Wednesday that Europol will dispatch a mobile unit with a number of expert officers to assist the local Greek Police (ELAS) in Evros to tackle the increasing incidence of migrant smuggling from Turkey.
The Europol decision was taken following the visit of its executive director Catherine De Bolle to the region earlier this month.
The Europol officers, who will be deployed across the Greek side of the Greek-Turkish border, will have special equipment with direct access to the large law-enforcement organization’s database.
Along with their experience and expertise in tackling smuggling incidents, this new type of assistance will offer valuable aid to local Greek authorities, which face a constantly-growing wave of migrants who are illegally smuggled through Turkey to Greece.
Europol is the common name used for the European Union’s Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation.
