Greek members of Parliament approved on Friday evening the accession of FYROM — which will now be known as “The Republic of North Macedonia” — into the NATO alliance.
The last act in the long procedure of solving the name dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia came to an end following a heated debate.
153 M.P.’s out of 300 in Parliament voted in favor of the bill. There were 140 members who voted against the legislation.
Along with the 145 M.P.s belonging to the parliamentary caucus of the left-wing ruling SYRIZA party who voted in favor, the six independent M.P.’s who declared last week that they would support Alexis Tsipras’ government initiatives also voted in the affirmative.
Greece’s neighboring country will officially change its name to the “Republic of North Macedonia” following Athens’ vote in favor of Skopje’s accession to the powerful Western alliance.
Heated Debate between Tsipras and Ex-Defense Minister Panos Kammenos
During the debate, the ex-ally of Tsipras and former National Defense Minister, Panos Kammenos, accused the Greek Prime Minister of dissolving his party’s parliamentary caucus, mentioning the M.P.’s who left his party, ANEL, to support Tsipras’ government.
In a heated debate, Kammenos said that Tsipras committed a political crime by dissolving his party’s caucus and accused the former members of his party, who left to support SYRIZA, that they exchanged their beliefs for a ministerial position.
In response, the Prime Minister said that Kammenos tried to stop him from reaching a deal with Skopje, and undermined his government. That is why he decided to terminate their cooperation.
