Greek farmers from across the country have started protesting by blocking roads and highways in many areas across the nation. The farmers are demanding lower oil prices, reductions to the costs of production, better taxation rates and lower social security contributions.
The protests began on Monday morning, with hundreds of farmers gathering in Thessaly’s Nikea, blocking at times the highway which connects Athens with Thessaloniki.
On Monday, more than 500 tractors were gathered together, blocking major streets in the cities of Larissa, Volos, Trikala and Karditsa.
Farmers from Veria, Naoussa, Florina, Pella and Serres have also assembled their tractors in central areas of their regions in Macedonia.
In Veria, the farmers brought their vehicles together in the Kouloura area, and are threatening to block the Egnatia highway, which connects Thessaloniki with West Macedonia.
Farmers and stockbreeders have gathered in the roadway which connects Naoussa with the cities of Veria and Thessaloniki.
In Florina, the farmers parked their tractors together in Antigono, near the town of Amynteo. The police in Serres stopped groups of farmers from reaching the area of Promachonas, preventing a total blockage of the Greek-Bulgarian border.
