The FYROM parliament voted on Friday to pass an amendment to the constitution to change the country’s name to North Macedonia.
The name change is part of a deal which the country made with Greece, in order to resolve the controversial name dispute issue and make it possible for the new country of “Northern Macedonia” to join NATO and potentially the European Union as well.
However, the deal will not go into effect until it is ratified by Greece’s parliament in the coming weeks.
Prime Minister Zoran Zaev had to secure a minimum of 80 votes to pass the amendment. 81 deputies in the 120-seat parliament voted in favor of the amendment, while MP’s from the opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, boycotted the vote.
