The Majestic Beauty of Frozen Kastoria Lake

Kastoria lake in northern Greece froze solid on Wednesday, a result of the sub-zero temperatures which descended on many areas across the nation of Greece for the past several days.
The lake is considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes, not only in Greece but also in the whole Balkan Peninsula, and has been listed as a “Natural Monument of Outstanding Beauty” by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

Scientists estimate that Kastoria Lake was formed 10 million years ago. The lake has a surface of 28 square kilometers (11 square miles) and is quite shallow, having an average depth of only approximately 9 m (27 feet).
