Turkey’s attempt to register the “Turkaegean” trademark in Thailand has failed, following an intervention by Greece in the trademark registration process.
The development followed action by the Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Greek Embassy in Bangkok, which identified the application and recommended that Greece file an opposition. The case was subsequently examined under Thailand’s intellectual property procedures.
Greece Filed an Opposition in Thailand
According to the Greek Economic and Commercial Affairs Office in Bangkok, Greece filed its opposition on September 5, 2024, followed by further interventions and contacts with Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP).
Turkey did not submit a response memorandum within the deadline provided by the Thai procedure. The application was subsequently abandoned under Thailand’s trademark rules.
The application now appears in the Thai intellectual property system as “Dead,” indicating that it is no longer active.
Another Setback for “Turkaegean”
The Thai case is separate from earlier trademark proceedings involving “Turkaegean” in Europe and elsewhere. In 2026, Greece secured the cancellation of the trademark registration in the European Union following proceedings before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
The latest development shows that Greece’s efforts over the use of the “Turkaegean” name are not limited to Europe. At the same time, the Thai decision applies to the specific trademark application and jurisdiction involved and does not mean that the term has been prohibited worldwide.
The intervention in Thailand therefore adds another chapter to Greece’s efforts to challenge commercial use of the name “Turkaegean,” which Greek authorities argue can create confusion over the geographic identity associated with the Aegean.
