Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Greek basketball phenom who is a standout player on an American NBA team, spoke to Greek state TV broadcaster ERT about the recent racial incident involving his brother.
Antetokounmpo stated he is still affected by the racist remarks which were aimed at his brother Thanassis.
The star of the Milwaukee Bucks said that ”there are some times in life when you say enough is enough. I lost my sleep, I was devastated.” Antetokoumnpo added that he didn’t speak out to defend himself or his brother, but to raise awareness for people who suffer racism every day.
Antetokounmpo referred to the Greek Premier’s decision to wear the national basketball team’s outfit with the Antetokounmpo name on it, saying that ”it was a great gesture.”
The star player expressed his fears that if someone can utter such racist insults against a famous basketball player, ”imagine what they could say to a young child of 5 or 7 years old at school”.
Antetokounmpo thanked Greeks for their love and support throughout his career, noting that ”it’s nice seeing Greek flags on the court and listening to people chanting my name”.
