Sydney’s diverse cultural melting pot is constantly evolving. And, according to an anthology titled Multilingual Sydney, Greek is no longer ranked as one of the city’s top spoken languages.
Mandarin has now taken the place of Greek as a second language.
The cultural map of Sydney has seen a abrupt changes in recent years. There has been an increase of almost seventy percent of people who speak Mandarin between the years 2011 and 2016.
Multilingual Sydney co-author, Dr. Alice Chik of Macquarie University, recently spoke to sbs.com. In her remarks, she stated that even though the amount of people speaking Mandarin is only at four percent, it ranks as the second-most common language in Sydney after English.
She added that languages from the Indian subcontinent make up the fastest-growing language group in the city.
Overall, only 2.4 percent of the population of Sydney currently speaks Greek, followed by Italian and Vietnamese at 2.3 percent. With growing immigration from Asia, Greek seems destined to soon lose even its current ranking of the third most commonly-spoken language in the city.
