Today in Crete, the largest anti-terror exercise of its kind to ever take place in Greece is underway at the ports of Souda and Iraklio.
The exercise, code-named “Jackal Stone,” started today and is expected to last through December 7. It is the annual exercise of the US Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR), and this year it will include the special forces from the Greek police and Greek Coast Guard.
Exercises the task forces will explore include how to respond to various terror-attack scenarios on relatively unprotected or vulnerable targets known as “soft targets”.
The annual exercise takes place in a different country each year and this year Greece has been chosen as the location, as it is the most valuable base in the Eastern Mediterranean for both the US and NATO.
