Turkey's Erdogan Threatens Greece and Cyprus on Cyprus' Independence Day

On the 58th anniversary of Cyprus‘ independence from the United Kingdom, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that ”in Cyprus and the Aegean Sea no move can be made without Turkey,” adding that ”those that try to ignore us in this region put their existence in jeopardy;” probably referring to the Republic of Cyprus and its efforts to extract oil and natural gas.
Erdogan’s statement came shortly after Turkey expressed its intentions to begin drilling for oil and natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea amid Cyprus’ concerns that Erdogan planed operations are within the island’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Despite Turkey’s threats, energy giant-companies like ExxonMobil of the United States and Total from France plan to start their operations in Cyprus’s EEZ within October.
