Tsitsipas Bids to Bring Major Tennis Tournaments Back to Greece

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas a 20-year-old Greek professional tennis player, and the youngest one ranked in the top 20, aims to bring an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tournament back to Greece.
“I think if things go the same as they are now, we’re going to see an ATP 250 or 500 in the next three, four or five years in Athens,’’ world number 15 Tsitsipas told Reuters at the U.S. Open.
Football and basketball are the most popular sports in Greece but tennis has already started gaining popularity, becoming one of the most viewed sports, partly because of the amazing performance of Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas is the first Greek man to be ranked inside the world’s top 100.
The record for a Greek is held by a woman, Eleni Daniilidou, who climbed to number 14 in the world in 2003.
Over the last 20 years, Greeks needed either to travel abroad or watch TV to see their top players. The last time Greece held an ATP tennis Tournament was when Athens held an event between 1986 and 1994, and a WTA competition between 1986 and 1990.
