Burned Homes in Greece's Fire-Stricken Mati Demolished

The first burned-out buildings from the fires that devastated the Greek resort of Mati in July were demolished by bulldozers on Monday.
Almost a month since the deadly fire of July 23, that claimed the lives of at least 96 people, Greek authorities moved in to demolish homes that have been marked as inhabitable.

The Athens Prosecutor’s Office is continuing to investigate the East Attica fires which also left dozens injured and hundreds of properties destroyed.
Witnesses and victims of the fires continue to testify to the public prosecutor. The office is determining criminal responsibility for the deadly impact of the blazes.
Meanwhile, senior members of the Greek authorities are being sued by a woman who lost her husband, son and daughter in the fires.
Varvara Voukaki’s lawsuit is directed at seven officials, including Interior Minister Panos Skourletis and the former heads of the police and fire services.
It is alleged a failure to communicate and coordinate properly exacerbated the impact of the fires.
The fires were the second-deadliest wildfire in the 21st century, after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Australia that killed 180.
