US Embassy Blasts Prison Leave for November 17 Killer

The U.S. embassy in Athens has issued a statement condemning the release of November 17 hitman Dimitris Koufodinas who walked out of Korydallos prison on Tuesday on a 48-hour leave.
“We thoroughly condemn this third furlough granted to a convicted terrorist and murderer,” the statement read.
It added that this is “a shameful injustice to his many victims’ families and a further incentive for his anarchist followers to commit violent and destructive acts in his name”.
Koufodinas — currently serving a number of life sentences for crimes including murder – had been on hunger strike demanding prison leave, granted to him last Thursday.
There has been a wave of actions in Athens in recent weeks by far-left groups in support of the jailed gunman’s quest for more prison leave.
The November 17 terrorist group was formed in 1975, and is believed to have disbanded in 2002 after the arrest and trial of a number of its members.
The group assassinated at least 23 people in 103 attacks, all of which were U.S., British, Turkish and Greek targets. Many more were not targets but people who happened to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time.
