AEK Go Top as Olympiacos Fall Further Behind in Greek Title Race

AEK Athens’ Lazaros Christodoulopoulos wheels away after scoring a penalty against Asteras

AEK had to be satisfied with a 1-0 penalty win against Asteras on Sunday to move top of the Greek league despite wasting a plethora of scoring opportunities.
Among the Athenians’ forwards, Sergio Araujo alone had five scoring chances, with the best coming in the 13th minute.
With the Asteras defense mistakenly lobbing the ball over their own goalkeeper, Araujo tried to smash it into the net from less than a yard but hit the crossbar instead. He also had another shot hit the post.
Substitute Lazaros Christodoulopoulos stuck away a second-half penalty four minutes after coming on to put the Athenian side one point ahead of PAOK who face a Monday night home clash against Larissa in Thessaloniki.
Olympiacos dropped a further two points in the title race, are now four points off the pace and may well find themselves even further behind on Monday after PAOK’s game.
The Greek champions fell twice behind Atromitos, who scored via Thodoris Vassilakakis and Nicolas Diguiny.
Yet they managed to equalize first through Marko Marin and then in injury time with Ehsan Hajsafi, who got the rebound from a saved penalty kick.
