French Party Leader Wants SYRIZA Out of European Left

French leftist leader Jean-Luc Melenchon has denounced Greece’s ruling SYRIZA party, saying it does not belong in a grouping of fellow European left-winger because of its “submissive” role in implementing austerity policies.
However, SYRIZA MEP Dimitris Papadimoulis, hit back on Twitter, writing: “The Melenchon demand is undemocratic, provocative, and divisive, so it is unequivocally rejected. The Left needs unity and alliances, not new divisions.”
According to an Athens-Macedonian News Agency report, Melenchon, leader of France’s Le Parti de Gauche (PG – Left Party), has asked that SYRIZA be removed from the European Left Party.
The reasoning of the French leftist is that Alexis Tsipras and his administration have submitted to “the logic of austerity to the point of restricting the right to strike, thus responding in an increasingly submissive way to the orders of the European Commission”.
“For the PG, as undoubtedly for other parties of the European Left, it has become impossible to be associated in the same movement with Alexis Tsipras’ SYRIZA,” Melenchon’s leftist party said in a statement.
