Athens Just Got Its Own Natural Hot Spring in Glyfada

Greek authorities have designated a stream in the southern Athenian suburb of Glyfada as being a hot spring, endorsing a decades-old demand of the local council.
The Aixoni hot spring makes Glyfada the first Municipality of Attica with a recognized hot, thermal spring.
Mayor George Papanikolaou says the decision will have multiple benefits for the wider region.
It will boost development and is expected to create new jobs.

According to the decision of the Ministry of Tourism, the waters at Aixoni hot spring, have healing properties and could be effective against rheumatic diseases, chronic rheumatism, back pain and nervous system disorders.
“The existence of ‘hot springs’ in Glyfada had taken legendary dimensions. It has been a matter of debate for many generations, but no one has ever done anything to investigate the matter,” Papanikolaou said.

The Glyfada council ordered a scientific examination of the Aixoni spring that resulted in its recognition as being a thermal spring.
“It is a development that creates a unique growth perspective unprecedented for history of the city,” Papanikolaou said.
He added that the city will immediately launch a development plan, utilizing both EU and national funds.
