Floods Bring Chaos to Central and Northern Greece (video)


The weather front that has claimed at least 16 lives in western Attica is also affecting areas in central and northern Greece, as well.
In central Macedonia, fast-moving floodwaters brought the National Highway between Athens and Thessaloniki to a halt on Thursday evening.
Traffic was diverted as a section of the highway near the town of Katerini, was flooded .
Bad weather has also hit Pella and Imathia. Overall, firefighters had to intervene in 38 cases to evacuate people from flooded properties.
Houses and shops flooded and roads were turned into rivers in the town of Alexandria.

Further south in Thessaly, there are fears that the Pinios River may overflow.

The level of water has reached dangerous heights as local authorities struggle to reinforce the embankments and prevent flooding.
