Yorgos Karamihos on His New Film ‘Paul, Apostle of Christ’

We spoke with Yorgos Karamihos about a new film he has coming out soon – “Paul, Apostle of Christ”, directed by Andrew Hyatt and starring Jim Caviezel, John Lynch, and Joanne Whalley.

In the movie, Karamihos plays a pivotal role as the younger version of Paul (James Faulkner), when he was still known as Saul of Tarsus. The film focuses on the transformation of Karamihos’ character from an infamous persecutor of Christians to an apostle and disciple of Christ.

When asked what first drew him to the script, Karamihos responded “the basic reason I accepted the role…is because the script has good characters with depth, and the story it has to say is a very beautiful story about the world”.

Due to the serious, intense nature of the movie and the plot, Karamihos said “there was actually a lot of humor on set so we can keep the atmosphere a bit lighter” for everyone.

Many people wonder how tricky it might to be film a religious movie, due to the risk of stepping on anyone’s toes or offending any group. However, Yorgos told us what he appreciated most was the director’s and producers’ insistence that the actors should be “as authentic and visceral as possible in order to be real”, rather than worry about handling things carefully.

The filming of the movie was done mostly in Malta, and Karamihos talked to us a bit about what it was like to film in such a unique location.

“Malta is one of the strangest places I’ve ever seen in my life – it is so built up for such a small place, that is the first thing I remember thinking when I was flying over the island. It has two amazing cities, Valletta and Medina, with incredible archaeological sites. It’s a strange combination of Africa, Asia, and Europe, bringing together all three continents both in the language and the culture and aesthetic.”

As for the local crew, some of the best people were available to help with the production, as Malta has also been one of the most prominent filming locations for “Game of Thrones”, so many crew members for the film also worked on the famous HBO series.

“Paul, Apostle of Christ” will be released on March 28, 2018; in the meantime, you can see Yorgos Karamihos in the UK series “The Durrells of Corfu” along with Alexis Georgoulis. The series’ first two seasons have already been released in the UK and on PBS in the USA, and Karamihos just finished filming Season 3, which will be released in 2018.
