Record of 12,000 Contract Hirings in Greek Public Sector in 2016

The Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP) report for 2016 shows that 12,125 people were hired in the public sector as seasonal staff, fixed-term employees and contract workers.
The number is a record-high increase, especially considering that through ASEP there were 5,584 recruits of permanent position civil servants and specialist scientists and professionals.
In the last four years, seasonal and extraordinary staff hirings in the public sector increased by 21.31%, while regular permanent employment declined by 5.6%.
Most recruits of permanent personnel – 62% – were by the Ministry of Health and its agencies, while 11.19% of hirings were by the Ministry of Justice. With regard to seasonal staff, 40% of the posts concerned the Ministry of the Interior (mainly in areas where refugees are handled) and the Ministry of Administrative Reconstruction.
