German Authorities Charge 4 Germans and a Greek With Bribery for Defense Contracts

Bremen prosecuting authorities have charged four Germans and one Greek as suspects for bribing Greek officials for defense contracts, according to a Deutsche Welle report on Thursday. The story was broken by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), citing sources.
According to the paper, the five former associates of the defense industry firm Rheinmetall Defense Electronics paid kickbacks to Greek officials between 1998 and 2011 in order to secure a contract for the delivery of the Asrad air defense system, as well as the sale of a firing system for Leopard 2 tanks delivered by the German company Krauss-Maffei-Wegman.
The newspaper said the case was considered particularly serious, involving bribes of about 3.3 million euros.
