Nicosia Responds to Akinci's Comments Regarding Reunification of Cyprus

This week Nicosia has had to respond to a series of comments made by the Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci regarding the reunification of Cyprus.
Firstly, Akinci stated that a federal Cyprus and not the existing Republic will sign a reunification deal. In response, Nikos Christodoulides, a Cyprus government spokesperson commented that the Republic of Cyprus will not be dissolved to make way for a federation with constituent Greek and Turkish states.
Also Aknici stated that adding that the presence of the permanent members of the UN Security Council is “is not needed” at the Geneva talks scheduled for January 12.
To this comment Christodoulides responded: “If we want to reach a positive result then we cannot but support the participation of the five permanent members of the Security Council and the European Union.”
On Friday Cypriot President Nicos Anastasides is due in Athens to meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras before the January 12 meeting to continue discussing the Cyprus talks.
