Mitsotakis Presents 12+1 Proposals for Fighting Corruption

mitsotakisMain opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday presented his “12+1 proposals” for fighting corruption in the Greek state at the 9th annual conference of Transparency International Greece in Athens.
Mitsotakis attacked the government for setting up a party-dominated state, lawlessness in public administration and interventions in justice.
“The country’s problem is not just economic. It is deeply institutional and, at its core, it is the breach of the citizens’ trust in the political system,” he said.
After years of false dilemmas, life itself had shown the populist oversimplifications for what they were, he noted, while the present government had taken a series of initiatives that undermined transparency, chief among them its attempted intervention in the affairs of justice.
Among his proposals were support for the work of justice in fighting corruption, setting targets for transparency and integrity in public agencies, simplifying procedures by using new technology, restricting direct contact between citizens and public-sector staff and better control of transparency in political party funding, among others.
