Farewell Obama… U.S. President Leaves Athens for Berlin

U.S. President Barack Obama concluded his visit to Greece on Wednesday, leaving from Athens International Airport for the next leg of his “Farewell” tour to Europe. Earlier in the day, he spoke at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, where he highlighted the need for debt relief so that the country, especially young people can see hope and a future. “Zito i Ellada,” long live Greece, but that was not the only Greek he spoke, referring to the country’s “filotimo.”
“In all of our communities, in all of our countries, I believe there is more of what Greeks call ‘filotimo.’ Love and respect and kindness for family and community and country and a sense that we are all in this together, with obligations to each other. ‘filotimo’: I see it every day and that gives me hope,” he added.
“The IMF has said that debt relief will be crucial to get Greece back to growth. They are right. It is important because if reforms here are to be sustained, people here need to see hope and they need to see progress,” said Obama.
“You don’t have to travel overseas, you can put roots right here in your home, in Greece, and succeed. And I am confident that if you stay the course, as hard as it has been, Greece will see brighter days,” he said, while addressing youth from the SNFCC podium.
Tsipras tweets
Tsipras couldn’t have said it better himself. And he had a parting gift for the U.S. President when the famous radical leftist did what he does best, taking to Twitter with three posts. “Farewell to @POTUS Obama who worked with stamina for democracy and the rights of all regardless of background, religion or gender.”
“We are obliged to continue to fight for social justice without exclusion in order to build societies.”
